<image:caption>Design-Build Team: Victor Perez-Amado Anton Skorishchenko Robert Lee Photo by Yasmin Al-Samarrai As part of the Ontario Place Light Exhibition 2020, we designed “Lumina” as an immersive installation that uses the medium of light and color to create a three-dimensional optical illusive cocoon. Based on the concept of “light art and light painting” this playful installation invites the public to be submerged in a series of never-ending glowing canvases.</image:caption>

The space features cedar "pebbles," which serve as seating and as planters, as well as hexagonal tree planters. As you sit or walk among the oaks, maples, cherries, poplars, willows, elms, and conifers, solar-powered lighting elements move with the wind. Reflecting the CN Tower’s and Canada Lands Company’s commitment to enrich Canadian communities and experiences, the pop-up park is an exploration of innovative design strategies that embrace adaptable furniture, participatory design, multi-generational place-making, material prototyping, and ecological restoration. The project also re-envisions what urban green space can be through design and ecological innovation.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Winter Stations 2019 International competition winner: Four installations selected via an international design competition Installation description: Cavalcade is an installation that reflects the collective spirit of human movement and transversal. Not just in the contemporary political sense of global migration, but in the consensus that the human quest for a better life is one that is timeless and universal. Cavalcade depicts people migrating towards something better. The spectator is placed in the midst of this movement as their reflection off a mirror at the centre of the installation reaffirms this collective connection. Their project “Woggle Jungle” was selected from more than 200 entries. Set within the heart of Toronto’s downtown core, the Woggle Jungle is a squishy mini-park amongst a forest of glass towers. Hundreds of colorful foam noodles are clustered together to create a cheerful and immersive environment that encourages play and relaxation in our city’s busiest district. Seating benches made from foam noodles are scattered throughout to create opportunities for rest and social interaction for adults and children alike.</image:caption>

<image:title>Exhibitions - 2019 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism</image:title>
<image:caption>(Re) Revisiting the Valley Section was a project on display at the 2019 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism; assistant professors Victor Perez-Amado and Fadi Masoud were invited to contemplate new urban forms and housing typologies that are sensitive to the landscape conditions on both sides of the Jordan Valley. The project was a response to the Biennale's theme, "Collective City.” Masoud and Perez-Amado propose a series of new housing typologies that take the Jordan Valley's geographic and environmental context into consideration, while also referencing the traditional courtyard architecture of arid regions in the Middle East. <image:title>Exhibitions - Parks in Action: Towers, Hubs & Open Space Transformations</image:title>
<image:caption>Azure Awards 2024: Winner People's Choice for Environmental Leadership The Parks in Action exhibition highlights the role of parks, open spaces, and the public realm in fostering climate action in Toronto’s inner suburbs. Urban green spaces range from expansive ravine networks to pocket gardens, and from street rights-of-ways to school yards and green roofs. Regardless of their scale, they are valuable tools for urban climate change mitigation and adaptation. Toronto’s parks fulfill essential social and environmental prerogatives, including mitigating urban heat island effect, supporting biodiversity, and improving air quality. Similarly, they offer crucial water management goals and reduce the impact of extreme weather events. Well designed parks also act as inclusive gathering places, fostering social interaction, health, and well-being. “Parks in Action” aims to demonstrate how climate action in the public realm is generative of participatory design and social engagement—from the scale of small local installations “hubs” to“tower communities” along urban watersheds. Central to this work is the link between social equity and climate adaptation—ensuring that all communities, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds, have equal access to green spaces and their benefits.</image:caption>

<image:title>Research - Queer Households and Possibilities for Shared Housing: A Policy Case Study Analysis</image:title>
<image:caption>Authors: Victor Perez-Amado, Celeste Pang, Alex Walton Journal of Urban Design https://doi.org/10.1080/13574809.2024.2392100 Abstract: Kinship structures among Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (2SLGBTQI+) individuals differ from conventional nuclear families. Heteronormative models of family and cohabitation impact housing options, resulting in the marginalisation of queer households in Canada. This paper examines systemic factors in federal, provincial, and municipal policies, focusing on two specific policies: Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit and Expanding Housing Options in Neighbourhoods, which limit housing provision for 2SLGBTQI+ individuals. Using Toronto as a case study, it evaluates how these policies affect the household needs of 2SLGBTQI+ adults based on queer kinship and identifies opportunities for change. Keywords: chosen family, queer kinship, 2SLGBTQI+ people, shared housing, policy evaluation</image:caption>
