Toronto Winter Stations Competition 2017
Diversity plays an important role in Canada’s formation and evolution. Today Canada proudly boasts the highest percentage of foreign-born citizens than any other G8 country. Canada is stronger because it is the home of millions of immigrants that seek peace, stability, and a place for future prosperity.
“All-Caps” is a celebration of that diversity. The installation is composed of a vertical field of strings that hold white and red recycled plastic bottle caps. The white caps form a spherical geometry representing the globe, while an abstracted map of Canada appears in the red. Printed on the red caps are the names of each foreign country that makes up Canada’s population, while the white caps appear and disappear in the backdrop of a snowy beach. Some of the white caps will hold metal rings that rattle in the wind, creating an auditory experience from a distance.
The perspective of the image morphs in relation to the viewer’s sightline, yet it is the summation of the individual pieces that makes the entire unit appear.
